Mental Health Concerns In The Prison System

Posted by Ask Emily on March 9, 2014 at 12:20 PM

This is a topic that needs to be brought more into the public view.  Most people are familiar with the saying, "Lock him up and throw away the key."  Sadly, what some people may not realize is that this happens all to often when it comes to mental health concerns in the prison system.  It does not take a Rocket Scientist, to realize that prison is not supposed to be a fun and happy place.  It is where people are sent when they have committed a crime of some kind.  They are not there to get the treatment that they might if they were a celebrity, or were staying in a 5 star hotel, but what some people in society may not realize, is that criminals or not, they are still human beings.  Mental Health concerns, can be very scary, not only from the outside looking in, but also from the inside looking out.  Most of us know that some people are struggling with the Health Care System in its current state, but what some people may not know or realize, is that when you are in the prison system, a lot of these services are not available to inmates.
